This field was lit like it was internally glowing from the effect of a very low angled morning sun. I liked the feel of the warm foreground in front of the moody middle ground with all its paint mixtures of blues and violets and teals. This was a perfect setting for blue bird houses and hence the title of this piece.

The inspiration for this piece came from the lighting. I really enjoy shadows running across the picture plain. The strong lighting in “Blue’s Field” came from high-key mixture of yellow, orange and white with little dabs of this and that to get the lighting right. The central detail of the bird house is subtle but contrasts with the cool color shadow areas in the forest behind. Additionally, I paid close attention to the color temperatures in the trees that were lit differently. I do this to give it believability and position in the whole composition.
