This painting almost painted itself. I was drawn to this image because the design elements within each piece were so strong. There are repeated triangles implied between the buildings and trees, and the stark early evening sun made for some interesting painting challenges.
I particularly enjoyed the reflected light on the second story of the house and how the prospect of flowering crops means a harvest at some future point. I chose the darkened foreground so that the eye would travel visually over it and into the scene to the yellow flowers. I played up the color in the buildings making them a little bluer to complement with the sky. Like others I’ve painted, there’s a full palette of color: yellow, orange, red, purple, blue, and green.
