Late evening shadows are one of my favorite things to paint in the landscape. I like how the edges illuminate with a myriad of golden lights. Even though there is a consistent light, each color still needs to be mixed and that was the main challenge in painting Gold Trace.
I was drawn to the serenity and simplicity in this little gem of a scene. It conveys the peace and satisfaction that comes at the end of the day: work’s been done, the yard is mowed, and the low-angled sunset sends a subtle message of hope. Each shed gave off an air of having its own personality, and I attributed that to when they were built and the personality of each builder.
The arresting composition of this view spoke to me. It had a strong design that was simple and believable even at a small size. The colors and the mood were alive and the strong yellow-white barn was lit up like it was on fire.
